Yooka-Laylee (Game) - Giant Bomb

Yooka-Laylee is an all-new 3D platformer from the creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games. Yooka-Laylee is a game out of time.

The adventure begins when corporate president Capital B steals a book’s golden pages, called Pagies, from a lizard and bat named Yooka and Laylee. The characters are charming and funny, your set of abilities is vast and entertaining, and four out of five of the worlds are fun playgrounds to explore. The pair figure that the Pagies must be valuable if someone would bother to steal them, so of course they decide to enter Capital B’s building to get them back. That hub area, Hivory Towers, splits into five themed worlds with a variety of collectibles to find, including Pagies, currency-like Quills, and powerups.

Players take control of a cartoon lizard (Yooka) and his bat partner (Laylee) in a journey to collect the pages of a magical tome after it is stolen from the greedy corporate magnate Capital B. Along the way, they dive into various books to explore their inner world. From jungle ruins to the far reaches of space, the duo searches to collect an assortment of shiny tokens and plot trinkets. You can explore these worlds in any way you’d like, which is a huge improvement to this genre’s structure. In older platformers, you’d often be forced to fight a world boss before being able to unlock more areas in Yooka-Laylee, you’re only limited by the moves that Yooka and Laylee know. You’ll occasionally have to fight a somewhat wonky camera, but this is usually only an issue in indoor areas.

There are only five levels, none of which have a terribly original theme. The first world is “tribal”-themed, for example, which was also the case in both Banjo-Kazooie and -Tooie. The casino level is the weakest of the five; it introduces a new kind of collectible that can be exchanged for Pagies, adding an unnecessary layer to the collecting process. But the rest of the levels lay out their collectibles well, and finding all 200 Quills in a level always gave me a sense of pride. For example, Yooka can temporarily assume the properties of certain objects that you lick in environment — applying your tongue to honey, for instance, makes you sticky, allowing you to walk across slick surfaces.
