The Surge' Is A Sci-Fi Souls Game

In a 2017 that’s been overflowing with excellent games, The Surge may be the single biggest surprise so far.

The Surge is designed in the challenging role-playing game style of the Souls series of games. The gameplay involves players using an exoskeleton to battle enemies. The exoskeleton can be customized through the game using "modular upgrades", according to the developer. The combat allows players to target different body parts of enemies, as well as utilize finishing moves often ending in dismemberment in bullet time fashion.

The Surge takes place in a future built on the anxieties of the present. The world has been wrecked by climate change, and a company called CREO has stepped up to fix things, working on projects to improve the atmosphere and meld humans with machines. The game’s protagonist, a wheelchair-using man named Warren. Warren arrives just in time for things to go to hell. Following a painful operation that equips him with a "rig"  a mechanical device that gives him the ability to walk, and also boosts his speed and power , Warren wakes up in a facility under attack from the inside. Something has driven most of the other employees to murder and violence, and it’s up to Warren to figure out what happened — or at least survive long enough to escape CREO.

The Surge is quite hard to pin down. Not just because of the limb targeting but because the game is noticeably less focused on boss encounters than Dark Souls. There are still plenty, and they’re all very hard, but the smaller enemies are, in general, much tougher opponents than their equivalents in Dark Souls. There are no easy kills and you can forget about taking them all out on your way to somewhere as a matter of course, as they’re far too difficult to ever be routine.
