American Airlines has suspended an employee after a video showed an altercation on one of its planes involving crew, several passengers and a crying woman carrying a young child. American Airlines is investigating after the video surfaced on social media showing a confrontation between a passenger and a flight attendant aboard one of its flights.
The incident started over a dispute as to whether the woman could bring her stroller on the flight, The employee violently took a stroller from the woman, hitting her with it and just missing her child, Facebook user Surain Adyanthaya said in a post accompanying the video he put on the site on Friday. Mr Adyanthaya’s video captured the mother holding a child in her arms and sobbing at the front of Flight 591 from San Francisco for Dallas.
The video, filmed by another passenger Friday, appears to be the aftermath of an incident during boarding of a flight from San Francisco to Dallas. It does not show what happened beforehand.
A male passenger then walks toward the front of the plane and demands from the airline crew the name of the employee who took the stroller before he returns to his seat. Another unidentified male passenger in the Facebook video gets up from his seat and intervenes, “Hey, Sir, I’m not going to sit here and watch this stuff.”
The airline agreed that the attendant shouldn't have confronted the woman in that way; he has been put on paid leave while it investigates what happened. An American Airlines spokesman said: “What we see on this video does not reflect our values or how we care for our customers".
The woman took the next flight out of San Francisco and made her original connection in Dallas to the daily flight from there to Buenos Aires, the airline said. American upgraded her and her children to first class for the flight to Buenos Aires. She was in Argentina by Saturday morning.
The incident comes two weeks after a United Airlines passenger was dragged off a plane for not giving up his seat on a plane by Chicago aviation police, this time of a flight attendant behaving badly.
