5-- Artist Steve Mills:
was raised on Martha’s Vineyard and in Walpole, MA. He began drawing at an early age, requesting a pencil over crayons to achieve better detail. This fascination for and facility with detail ultimately became his artistic calling card. He sold his first drawing at the age of 11, and helped pay for his college degree by drawing yachts on the docks of Menemsha on the Vineyard. After beginning college as a meteorology student, he switched majors and embraced the art program, finally realizing his talent under the guidance of his painting professor, William Kendall. He graduated magna cum laude, receiving his BA in art in 1982. His journey toward a successful career began just a year later, when Mills sold 33 of the 35 paintings exhibited at his first solo show. At another of his many successful shows, his work sold out in ten minutes. Mills’ early paintings were primarily landscapes, which were influenced by the work of Andrew Wyeth. After viewing an exhibition of the work of Richard Estes in Boston, MA, Mills began experimenting with Photorealism. Today his interests are somewhat varied, though his main focus is on what he calls “the extraordinarily-ordinary” demonstrating his skill and talent to capture details that, unless looked at with a magnifying glass, would otherwise go unnoticed. Mills lives and works in Florida with his wife of 15 years, Leigh.
