Meet a girl named Amber and her therapy donkey Shocks, who both had a rough start in life, Shocks was found with a rope tied around his neck and skin covered in lesions and sores from being tethered. Luckily, he was rescued and taken to The Donkey Sanctuary in Birmingham, England, where he met Amber in 2013. The young girl and her donkey have helped each other heal in remarkable ways.
At that time the girl wasn’t able to make a single sound. When Amber and her sister were born prematurely, Amber was born with cerebral palsy and required surgery at birth that saved her life but cut off air flow to her vocal chords, leaving her mute. On top of that, the girl has cerebral palsy which made it a struggle for her to move around.
When rescuers found Shocks the donkey, he was lying in a field at a farm in Ireland the donkey was found with a rope tightly tethered around his neck. Festering lesions bore into his skin under the rope, the wounds doused with bleach by the previous owner, who thought that would help.
A friend mentioned The Donkey Sanctuary to Tracy-Amber’s mother-and told her the donkeys can give therapy to additional needs children, so they decided to try it.” Also doctor had recommended Amber’s parents take her to the therapy donkey refuge to help her build muscle strength in a safe and nurturing environment. When the pair met, both of them showed signs of recovery almost instantly.
But everything started changing when she met Shock. “It was fairly immediate to see they had a bond together, as they were both so gentle with each other,” Amber’s mom Austwick told The Dodo. “They really seemed smitten!”. She still hadn't said a word when she went to visit Shocks one day in November 2013. After taking a ride with him and getting ready to leave the sanctuary to go home, she hugged the donkey and said, "I love you, Shocky."
Now Amber is going to school and growing up strong, but she still visits her best friend, Shocks.
