Prizmo Go: Scanning & OCR app for iPhone and iPad

Prizmo is OCR  reinvented for the mobile era, and, like many reinventions, it's a mixture of brilliant new ideas and details that aren't fully worked out yet. Digitally capture your physical document, card or image with ease, thanks to Prizmo’s automatic page detection and processing tools, including crop, rotate, readability enhancement, and image cleanup. Prizmo comes in two versions, one for OS X, which is the one I tested, and another for the iPhone and iPad, which I didn't test but which has the same basic capabilities.

Prizmo employs optical character recognition (OCR) to process your scans and produce their digital equivalents. And what makes Prizmo for OS X different is that it's designed from the start to work with cameras as well as scanners. If you connect an iPhone or iPad to your Mac by a USB cable, you can snap a picture and Prizmo will instantly capture it and try to extract text from it. If you connect any other camera to your Mac, it lets you browse through the photos in the camera's internal storage and select one or more pictures that you want to process with OCR.

With Prizmo you use your iPhone camera, point and shoot camera, or DSLR to capture images of documents, and then the software uses optical character recognition (OCR) to turn the scans into editable text. Prizmo also works with scanner that lacks OCR capabilities from companies like Brother, Canon, Xerox, Lexmark, Epson, and HP. Then Convert your scans into PDF, text, vCard, JPEG or PNG files and export them to be shared via email or saved to your favorite cloud storage service.

While Prizmo is easy to learn and offers a quick OCR solution, there are several features that limit its usefulness. The software only works on Apple products and does not directly integrate with Microsoft Office. While there is a workaround, the accuracy of the document decreases. If your company works exclusively with Macs, this is one of the best OCR software for Macs available. Prizmo Go is an excellent implementation of computer vision and iOS Camera features, and it's gained a permanent spot on my iPhone and iPad.

Prizmo Go is available for free on the App Store.
