Samsung Galaxy Note 8 release date news and rumors

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is the biggest comeback story in phones following all of the disastrous Galaxy Note 7 battery failures last autumn. The Note 7 has caused major headaches for Samsung. Now discontinued, fans are looking forward to the Note 8, which has not been dropped by Samsung and is apparently codenamed Great.

Samsung is now taking the precaution of sourcing its battery cells from a new supplier; reports state the firm will bring in fellow Korean OEM LG, or at least its subsidiary, LG Chem, to produce battery cells for the Galaxy Note 8. As far as we are aware, LG hasn't produced an exploding battery smartphone to date. The battery issues that caused some phones to explode. So the pressure is on for Samsung to get this year’s Note phone just right. The good news is that if Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 is anything to go by, we’re expecting the Galaxy Note 8 to be awesome, so this SHOULD mean the Galaxy Note 8 will be a safe device for consumers.

We'd expect Samsung to make the same design changes in the Note 8 in response, which means we'll see a larger, taller and potentially pressure-sensitive screen, with the fingerprint scanner moved to the rear and the home button gone altogether. Another rumor suggested that the Galaxy Note 8 could act as Samsung's first smartphone with a foldable screen. It's extremely unlikely, but a fun thought.

ou can also expect innovations from the S8 to make the leap to the Note 8, including the removal of the home button, and the fingerprint reader relocating to the back of the phone. It’s also possible that the increased screen size of the Note (plus Samsung’s love of the Gear VR where your eyes are super close to the screen) to justify a leap to a 4K display.

We haven't seen any Galaxy Note 8 release date leaks just yet, but we have a good idea of when the phone will be announced. It’s likely that Samsung is still interested in the project, especially considering that Apple is also working on similar Touch ID tech for the iPhone 8.

The Note 7 launched in September, the Note 5 arrived in August, and the Note 4 landed in October (no silly, there was never a Note 6). Expect the Note 8 to by October or November at the latest.
